Cargo screening

High power continuous wave X-ray generators for non-intrusive material identification

Rhodotron® generator

The Rhodotron® is a unique X-ray generator for cargo inspection. Its beam duty factor is much higher than traditional Linacs making it a perfect fit for high quality technologies such as spectroscopy (photon counting). High power X-ray is another uniqueness of the Rhodotron® allowing to scan cargos with dense loads.

  • From 1 to 10 MeV of beam energy
  • Optional dual energy beam
  • Up to 560 kW of beam power
  • Continuous wave beam avoiding signal pile up with technologies such as spectroscopy
  • Scanned or static beam

Why the Rhodotron® for cargo screening?

X-rays have long been used for their radiographic inspection purposes; they were used mainly to outline the shapes of concealed objects. As these old methods were subjective, slow and revealed little information about what those objects were actually made of.

National security initiatives call for automated detection with the ability to locate concealed high Z materials and demonstrate a greatly improved false-positive/false-negative rate. Additional capabilities may also include the ability to identify an object's specific elemental and isotopic composition, so as to reveal the presence of hidden explosives and drugs, or to discern between dangerous and benign isotopes. To achieve these goals many of the new inspection methods, such as NRF, require the use of IBA’s Rhodotron® unique properties.
